So I have to admit The Sounds haven’t been on my radar for quite a while, I liked Living In America when it came out and I liked their live show, but I just never kept up with them. But this morning as I was catching up on email from last week, what did I find in last Friday’s Tripwire email but a link to a teaser for the new album, Dying To Say This To You.
Dying To Say This To You hits North American soil on March 21st via Newline Records, it was produced by Jeff Saltzman who also did The Killers Hot Fuss. I imagine that they’ll be back in the States around this time after they finish up their European dates in February, dates will be posted accordingly.
Went to the Avalong Bar/Mower Shop for the Briefs, Smiling Face Down, and Geisha Girls show in the Mower Shop. The Mower Shop was exactly what I expected it to be, a gutted building with some art on the fresh painted walls and large outside area in the back. I guess the guy who owns the Avalon Bar, a relatively new bar itself, bought the building that used to be a real lawn mower repair shop and plans on turning it into a art/performance space. I actually only caught the Geisha Girls performance cause my friend Ryan and I had got there early which means we started to drink early and after a while couldn’t hang any longer.
And also I will be seeing The Briefs this Friday in Vegas at Punk Rock Bowling with The Swinging Utters and Riverboat Gamblers.
Without much more than a website update and tag in their weekly ads in the OC and LA Weeklies, Alex’s Bar will be celebrating their 6th year in business with two high profile shows featuring Riverboat Gamblers and Throw Rag. Both bands played last year’s 5th anniversary, I guess Alex Hernandez liked them so much he’dd try to make this anniversary as good as the last. I barely attended last year’s bash, when we got to show a little late (as most of you know, Alex’s doesn’t do presale tickets) and were told it was sold out, luckily enough we had some friends inside who we able to persuade the door guy into letting us in. That night’s headliner was The Bronx with the Gamblers as the openers, and as they usually do, the Gamblers stole the show and the hearts of all in attendance, which should make for an even more raucous show this time. Especially since the Gamblers just finished recording a new album and are sure to treat us to some of their songs as well as their classics.

Also I should mention The Briefs are playing the Grand Opening of the MOWER SHOP in Costa Mesa which is next door to the Avalon at 814 19th Street, and since the Avalon doesn’t have a sign out front nor a website, just go park in the parking lot for the Detroit Bar and walk across the street to where a group of punks and hipsters are sure to be standing outside smoking. Oh and Mower Shop used to actually be a lawn mower repair and sales shop, so while the landscape business may be indecline, slinging drinks to the freshley hip 21 is on the rise in CM.
