The Submarines first caught my ear when I was browsing the SXSW website, I immediately downloaded the 3 tracks they had up on their website, though unfortunately I missed them down in Austin. Since then I have been anxiously awaiting a Southern California performance. Lucky for me I didn’t have to wait long as The Submarines will be playing the Indie 103.1 night at the Viper Room on Monday May 8th.
What first attracted to me to The Submarines was how sweet but utterly depressing both Blake’s and John’s vocals come across on each song. Maybe this has to do with the circumstances the album was made under, see the Submarines Blake Hazard and John Dragonetti did the couple thing, moved to LA, broke up and then later got back together, though this time it was for the music, the same thing that had brought them together in the first place back in Boston.
Declare a New State! seemed to lie in release date limbo for the past few months, but will now find itself on store shelves this spring, but you can now get it digitally.
Meet the members of the Long Beach group, Polus; Anthony Improgo, Mike Nielsen, Ryan Daly, and Richard Tampa. Richard and Ryan used to be in the band Eskimo, a great Long Beach band that showed incredible promise and recorded an ep with Alex Newport but folded due to what seemed like their lack of being able to find a permanent line up and probably the fact that they were so young.
And if you are curious as to what Eskimo sounded like, their MySpace page is still up and you can download all four tracks from the Alex Newport produced ep.
Los Angeles’ Pretty Vicious will be releasing a new EP in the US and UK on June 15th. The EP will include 2 new songs, though it isn’t specified what the other songs will be, wheather they are old songs off the band’s full length release Hollywood Forever or something else, I guess we’ll have to wait to find out.
In addition to the announcement of a new EP, Pretty Vicious will be embarking on short coastal California tour with Scissors For Lefty and The Cheat.
