Do you remember that scene in Weird Science when all the mutant bikers show up and crash the party at Wyatt’s house? Why you ask. Because that is how I would equate the crowd at Alex’s Bar last night for The Bronx, Priestess, Riverboat Gamblers, Wires On Fire show. Lots of tattoos and tittoos, odd piercings (were those Master Locks buddy?), and some guy literally trying to take a drink out of my hand. None of this foreign to me as I’ve seen dozens of shows there, it was just I noticed it more last night; maybe it because it was the first time anyone’s tried to take drink out of my hand.
On to the show, first up was Buddyhead’s Wires On Fire a band I have only seen once before I believe and that was quite a while ago at a house party when they were still called The Fallen. Their set was really impressive with their new songs sounding great, 4 of which you can stream on their MySpace page.
Next up was Riverboat Gamblers who always deliver with their live show of which I’ve seen twice before at Alex’s yearly anniversay parties for which he flys the band in.
After the Gamblers was Priestess who I must admit I didn’t watch much of and really only enjoyed when they played Lay Down, I don’t know what it is but I couldn’t get into it.

Finally The Bronx came on and the bar turned into a sweaty mess of dudes pushing each other around. They played all the great songs from their first LP and some of the new stuff off their upcoming self titled (again?) release of which you can download below.

Four tallboy’s of Tecate later (one per band) I called it a night and went home thinking “damn I got to get my hands on that new Wires On Fire disc”. Good night.

If you can tear yourself away from the World Cup tomorrow (Brasil vs Australia, Japan vs Croatia, France vs Korea) head over the Little Radio’s warehouse space for an afternoon filled with bands, bbq, booze, and kiddie pools, hosted by Rock Insider.
One of the my favorites, Division Day will be playing (they go on first) along with Dirty Little Secret and Morning 40 Federation.
Admission is free, drinks are cheap, opens at 1pm and bands start at 3pm.

Some times you don’t know about a good show happening in your own backyard until it is too late, luckily I got the scoop in enough time yesterday evening to make it down to the Blue Cafe to see Innaway, Madman Moon, Mellow Mood, and Brookline at a benefit show for Rene Benson who is battling cancer. I arrived too late to see any of Brookline’s set and was able to catch most of Madman Moon’s, but mostly I was there to see Innaway. A band from Costa Mesa that were introduced to me by some friends in the band Arkham, Innaway are somewhat locals heros around there I believe, having recently toured with Echo and the Bunnymen and Brian Jonestown Massacre. This was the first time I had actually got see Innaway perform, and I must say they reproduce their Radiohead meets classic 60’s psychedelic rock perfectly live.
It was a pretty good night, I had never been to the Blue Cafe, most of the time their shows don’t interest me. Infact this show wasn’t even listed on their website, it was taking place in the second story in the room next to the bar and pool tables. Even though this was the secondary room it had a much better atmosphere than the downstairs main room where the jazz, blues and white guy reggae bands play. Also interesting was that I found out that I have been living across the street from my friend Sam who does Trovata Clothing for close to 8 months and neither of us knew. So much for getting to know your neighbors.
