Pretty Girls Make Graves are playing Detroit Bar’s anniversary party, for their five-year anniversary party; the show is guest list only. Then you got the Beastie Boys playing Sole Tech’s afterparty for their Etnies Goofy vs. Regular Skate Contest, tickets are hard to get supposedly.
My suggestion, forget trying to get into these shows and go see Starlight Desperation and This Blush at Spaceland.

New on the block is Amateur Chemist, hittin’ up local SoCal shows, taking photos, and posting reviews. Check out the their photos and recap from The Hold Steady’s show at Detroit Bar this past weekend. More photos can also be found here.
Unfortunately my flight back from Belize didn’t arrive until well after the Detroit Bar show ended and I’m not feeling well enough to make the trip to the Troubadour tonight, so I guess I will just have to wait till next time The Hold Steady come to town again to see them, though I doubt the venues will be as intimate.
Find The Hold Steady tracks on The Hype Machine, to post a track would just be redundant. You can also stream the entire album from Vagrant.

The Heartaches are set to release their new album, “Too Cool For School” next Tuesday Oct. 24th via the legendary Swami Records. In conjunction with the release, The Heartaches are hitting the road visiting punk rock clubs and dive bars up and down the West Coast.
The Swami calls it “severely inhibited chord thuggery [that] convey[s] passionately tuneful pop masterpieces”, we call it a damn good beer swilling time. If you are familar with Swami, then you know you will be getting a quality rock n’ roll record. Make sure you pick this up next week.
Download Teenage Hypochondriac (mp3) courtesy of The Heartaches and Time (mp3) courtesy of the Swami, both tracks are from “Too Cool For School”.

So in an unfortunate stroke of bad luck the LA Weekly decided to hold their first music festival in downtown LA on the same day as the little old Eagle Rock Music Festival is being held.
Without the vehicle of a newspaper at their discretion, a headlining artist with a brand new album being released the same week, or major radio station blabbing about your festival every other minute, the Eagle Rock Music Festival (if this were a competition) is definitly the underdog, and lets face it, everything in life a competition.
For my money (yes I know the ERMF is free, hence the comment) I would choose heading to Eagle Rock easily over braving the scene in downtown LA. Plus recent reports of Beck delivering lackluster performances and seeing Queens of the Stoneage just a couple months ago at Street Scene, a 35 or something dollar ticket doesn’t sound that attractive, especially since the rest of the talent doesn’t interest me much, except for Peeping Tom and Blackalicous.
So if you are in the same boat as me and going to LA Weeky’s Detour Festival this Saturday in downtown doesn’t sound like much fun, I would suggest heading to Eagle Rock instead for what seems like a down right mellow no bullshit good time. The main section of Colorado Blvd from Eagle Rock Blvd to Argus Blvd will be shut down and local merchants and restaurants will stay open late to serve customers attending the festival.
