Patient they have been, since releasing their self-titled full length debut in 2004 and making a name for themselves around LA and abroad, Midnight Movies went into a pretty long hibernation during which the band lost and gained new members (including getting Gena out from behind the drum kit and up front where she belongs), writing a new record, and changing record labels.
And just as recently as a two weeks ago, we the fans who have been also waiting patiently for new material were treated to the release of their first single, “Patient Eye” from their forthcoming album entitled “Lion the Girl” which will be released this coming March. The single was released digitally (though 7″s and CD singles will be available at their live shows) and includes three tracks; Patient Eye (edit), Golden Hair (Syd Barrett cover), and Patient Eye (LP version).
Patient Eye is a dark haunting track that showcases Gena Olivier’s Nico-esq vocals over a Ladytron-ish sans big synths instrumentals.

If you are in the LA area, check out the Midnight Movies tomorrow (11/17) at Spaceland for their single release party and on Saturday (11/18) at The Prospector in Long Beach.

Beach House, if you haven’t read already, are getting a bunch of praise in the blog world right now, and rightfully so, the songs are great. But is this something you have to see live so that you can enjoy the recorded works that much more? I doubt it. And if I weren’t already commited to being somewhere else tomorrow night, I would have a definitive answer for you on Friday morning.
So if anyone ends up catching Beach House with Ariel Pink, Over The Atlantic, and Rich Ferguson at The Echo tomorrow night (11/16), leave a comment here and let me know if it is a life changing experience. Personally the thought of watching an act like Beach House at The Echo doesn’t sound that enjoyable, same goes for when Emily Haines plays at the El Rey in January, this is the type of music that should be enjoyed while sitting down.
And if you are the type that doesn’t read more than a couple blogs and haven’t heard anything by Beach House yet, grab some mp3s below.

It’s been a while since the Silversun Pickups played in Orange Country, I think maybe the last time was at The Galaxy with Autolux…this is a great opportunity to check them out for free if you haven’t seen them before. Their live show is absolutely great and is really rocking, more so than anything they’ve put to tape yet.

Los Angeles’ The Human Value are currently touring Europe where their self titled album was recently released by Big Deal Records, who are being generous and offering up The Human Value’s single Give Me for free for a limited time.
I was able to catch The Human Value at The Prospector in Long Beach right before they left for Europe and didn’t get the time to write about it, well and now seems like as good of time as any. Their set was intense with singer/keyboardist, Turu, belting out their songs and flailing about with a reckless abandon to a crowd of shy onlookers waiting for Monsters Are Waiting to get on stage. Hiram’s, the guitarist, sound is loud and powerful, as he runs his guitar through a bass and guitar cab, and drummer Lynnae packs quite punch for being such a small thing as she brutalized her kit.
The Human Value have been in Europe since the beginning of September and are scheduled to continue touring there until the end of November, you can check out their current UK dates at the link below.
Head over to the Human Value Media page to download Give Me (it’s a zip file, so if you are behind the corporate firewall like I am, and can’t download those at work, here is the mp3).

Back in June when Joe at Radio Free Silver Lake posted 10 of his favorite tracks from 10 of his favorite Los Angeles bands right then (btw, this guy is so on it when it comes to knowing about all the good LA bands no one has heard of yet), he included The Magic Art (mp3) from a 4 song demo by the band, Thailand. I quickly gravitated to this track over any of the others posted, it’s a perfect mix of the Velvet Underground and Wire that incited multiple listens over the next couple of months.
Since that post back in June, Thailand have been hard at work recording their debut album, “Motorcade”, which is now complete and set for release this December. You can stream a new track called Strong Like Lightning from “Motorcade” on their MySpace, and you can find them playing in Los Angeles nearly every week this November.
