Limbeck…Yeah I liked them back in high school

limbeckpic.jpg

It always a little odd when a band releases their 3rd or 4th album as a “Self Titled” album, which is just what Limbeck have done with their new album and 3rd full length release. If I can draw one conclusion from the phenomenon which has been witnessed in the past, is that when a band does this, it is the band making statement that this album best represents what they have all along intended their band to sound like.

With Limbeck, Limbeck had a lot more time to experiment with sounds and instrumentation than past recording sessions, with the result being a more mature as well complex effort. So much so that the band had to add a fifth member to their line up so that they could pull off the new songs live.

Hopefully this new album will find the band a wider audience as I think they are often written off as by the phrase, “yeah, I used like them when I was in high school”, which may or may not be a circumstance resulting from their geographic location (Orange County) and their record label (Doghouse Records), but is certainly not a reason for dismissing the band or their songs.

Limbeck kick off their US tour with Hot Rod Circuit and The Forecast tonight at Chain Reaction (hey hey, high school, if you got it flaunt it) in Anaheim and then play the Troubadour tomorrow night (April 19th).

The Sky Drops kick off US tour

skydropspic.jpg

Rewritable Content covered The Sky Drops last week, but I just wanted to throw a little reinforcement their way as they are making their way through Southern California this week. I realize this quite a busy week for shows here in Los Angeles, but if the bands playing the “Now Blog This” showcase at The Scene just aren’t you thing, then I suggest going to The Echo on Thursday (April 19th) night to see The Sky Drops open for Spindrift and The Stevenson Ranch Davidians (both of whom come highly recommended and have been featured here before). The Sky Drops will also be playing at Club Violaine @ Roberto’s Club on Saturday (April 21st), apparently this is LA’s shoegaze club, though I’ve never heard of it.

Falling somewhere between the sound of early 90’s era Subpop bands and My Bloody Valentine, this two piece from Wilmington, Delaware will kick off their diy cross country trek tomorrow night in San Diego with Spindrift at Club Pussy Galore at the SDSC.

4/15/07…This Week In Shows

Sorry this is a day late, hopefully you did something fun on Sunday, maybe you saw Ferraby Lionheart at Tangier or Dusty Rhodes & The River Band with the Free Moral Agents at The Continental Room in Fullerton. Regardless this weekend was a tough one and the thought of trying to put this post together on a dial up connection wasn’t that appealing.

Peter and The Wolf only LA performance this Friday

peterwolfpic.jpg

There is something to be said about people who truely just love music and put their money where their mouth is, and Jax at Rockinsider is one of those people. Yesterday morning (Thursday) she confirmed a last minute Peter & the Wolf show in Los Angeles for this Friday (tonight) at Pehrspace. Yes people, if it wasnt’t for her, you wouldn’t have the opportunity to see them perform here in LA.

Yes, Peter & the Wolf, or Red Hunter as you might know him, is coming through Los Angeles to play his only show here before he heads off up north. Supporting him in this super DIY effort of a show is Luke Paquin of Hot Hot Heat (don’t hold that against him, this sounds nothing like HHH), The Monolators (a band I really like, please make your new songs downloadable), Divisadero, and Fawnhawk.

The show is all ages and all they ask is a $5 donation at the door. Please do your part and support touring bands, your local bands, and those who support local and touring bands.

I’m trying not wear out the new Sea Wolf ep

seawolf_alex.jpg

Until recently I had put away Sea Wolf’s “You’re A Wolf” in an effort not to spoil my love for the song, because you know how sometimes when a song is so instantaneous likeable, it is easy to wear it out, especially when the rest of the world catches on and you can’t escape it. Well I am glad to say “You’re A Wolf” is back in my rotation, though I am limiting my spins and making sure to focus on the 4 other new songs on Sea Wolf’s new ep, Get To The River Before It Runs Too Low, that comes out May 8th on Dangerbird Records.

Now it is easy to just focus on “You’re A Wolf”, but that would be unfortunate because that song isn’t representative of the rest of the ep, which has a (and this is for people who need reference points) Arcade Fire-Tom Petty-The Smiths feel with a more linear type of story telling, as compared to the melody based-short on words “You’re A Wolf”.

Following “You’re A Wolf” is “The Garden That You Planted” that sounds like a sorry note sent to a past lover and is derivative of the Sea Wolf we became familiar with from the earlier demos, “Black Dirt” and “Middle Distance Runner”.

It’s with songs the “I Made A Resolution” and “Ses Monuments” that the Arcade Fire-Tom Petty-The Smiths reference rears it’s head and is where Sea Wolf sounds like a full band. The ep ends with “I Don’t Know If I Will Be Back This Time” a quite little number that leaves you a little disappointed that the disc is over so fast, though maybe that was the point as a repeat listen to the ep is almost guaranteed.

Los Angeles residents can catch Sea Wolf at the Echo Plex on April 26th with The Watson Twins and Earlimart and again on May 1st at the Troubadour supporting Sloan. Following those shows, Sea Wolf will hit the Northeast supporting labelmates Silversun Pickups.
