Reading all the negative comments on Rilo Kiley’s new album, Under The Blacklight, made me really want to like this album. I mean I wasn’t a Rilo Kiley fan from way back, so I didn’t have this preconceived notion of what their new album “should” sound like, instead I was coming into this release with a pretty clean slate.
Unfortunately I have to say that overall Under The Blacklight is more mis-steps than those in right direction. They do start their album off right with the blissfully melancholy opener “Silver Lining”, though it sets a false tone for the rest of the album which ends up being more Donna Summer than Fleetwood Mac. Track two, “Close Call” is another one of the album’s right direction tracks, continuing with the sad dark lyrics sung beautifully by Jenny Lewis, but it is with the next song, the album’s first single, “Money Maker” that Under The Blacklight trips up. UPDATE: Apparently the show was moved due to the fire marshall. Either way Los Angeles, the Echoplex better be full tonight!
This photo was taken by LA-Underground at Earlimart’s show at the Santa Monica Women’s Club last week…looks pretty sparse. I expected a little better, but unfortunately things are aren’t looking so great either for their second Los Angeles show tonight celebrating the release of their new album, Mentor Tormentor (review coming soon). Tonight’s show was supposed to be at the Rec Center, but just got moved to the Echoplex and tickets have been reduced from $16 to only $7. Now $16 does seem a little much, but at $7, tonight’s show is a down right bargain with Earlimart, The Parson Red Heads, and The Pity Party.
Need some more encouragement, download a couple of the new tracks from Mentor Tormentor which hit store shelves today.

Well I didn’t know shit about Kingdom of Magic until 10 minutes ago when I read about them over at Dirtbag’s Delight, but saw that they are playing the little dive bar tonight, Coconuts, in Orange County that seems to get a few good punk rock and metal shows every once in a while. Being that Coconuts is in Capistrano Beach (near Dana Point), I doubt anyone reading here was planning on heading down there tonight, I urge you to listen to the track below, all 7+ minutes of it, and odds are if you are a fan of heavy sluggy rock a la The Jesus Lizard and old AmRep stuff, you’ll be interested in this.
And if you can’t make it down to Coconuts tonight, it looks like Kingdom of Magic will be in Southern California next month with Planes Mistaken For Stars on their farewell tour.

When your expectations are low for a funky little street festival that’s organizer’s business practices may or may not be the most ethical in nature, it is not that hard to come away with a feeling of having a decent time. Arriving later than I would have liked to, due to everyone’s proverbial shit delaying us, my friends and I missed Division Day, The Pity Party, The Parson Red Heads, and Culver City Dub Collective (LAist was there, check out their pics), though I’m not sure if I made it there early enough to catch all those bands that I would have been able to stick it out long enough to see Blonde Redhead.
We got the there in the middle of The Broken West’s set, but the collective thoughts of most of us were focused on drinks, food, and shade which led us to El Cid, who’s patio was an oasis from the heat of the sweltering blacktop. Using the El Cid as a base between sets we drank and ate (yay for using a credit card, fuck those ATM lines and that whole drink ticket thing on the street), sneaking out to watch Sea Wolf battle the sound problems that plagued most bands sets, Autolux play way to early, and Blonde Redhead go on just at the right time as the sun was setting.
By the time Blonde Redhead had finished their set and an over inebriated girl who could no longer hold the day’s consumption puked on my friend’s wife’s leg, we called it a day. Not bad for a little street fair, but not something I was going to goto two days in a row and probably couldn’t have done one if it weren’t for the El Cid and 4100 Bar offering some relief from the heat and minimal seating. And by the way, just in case you might be thinking that I am temperature wuss, I have been to almost every other state in the US during the summer months and can tell you we Southern Californians are spoiled when it comes to our summer time weather, it’s I just don’t generally do outdoor summer festivals.
