Thursday, October 25th: Blonde Redhead @ The Wiltern
I don’t know about you, but I am glad that these two bands are finally playing a proper venue. Outside stages just don’t do Blonde Redhead and especially Autolux justice.

So The District Weekly’s inaugural “Best Of Long Beach” issue came out this week and we got a little plug, though I suspect it’s ’cause as far as I know there aren’t any other Long Beach bloggers covering the local music scene, but hey I’m not one to sneeze at the possibility of some more readers without whoring myself out or reposting press releases, so thanks Chris. You can read the issue online, but really should pick up the physical paper at a local business that’s smart enough to distribute it or find it in one their brand new street boxes (I just noticed them on 2nd street this week).
Also The District threw a bash with Cavil At Rest and On Blast at Smooth’s on Wednesday to celebrate the issue, but I spaced out and thought it was on Thursday, so I ended up missing it. For anyone else like me who didn’t make it out, you can check out the recap here and watch an interview with the magazine’s publisher, Will Swaim, here, discussing the future of print and publishing in the age of new media and a little bit about why he choose Long Beach to launch a new weekly.

The Parson Red Heads kicked off their Free & Easy West Coast tour last night at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa and will be hitting their local hood tonight at Spaceland (Long Beach, see them at The Prospector on Sunday, November 4th). I just recently got their new long player, King Giraffe, when it went up on iTunes and though I have been singing the band’s praises from some time now based soley on the strength of the mp3s I heard online, I can now fully attest to their greatness. Out now on Yukon Records, as is their previous album, Field Mouse Carnival, King Giraffe starts off in the vein of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Stevenson Ranch Davidians, but then quicky enters the territory of The Byrds and other 60’s Laurel Canyon bands which is what suits them best.
For everyone who is used to seeing the Red Heads on the schedule each week at the local Los Angeles clubs, get ready for a break as the band will be spending the next month touring up and down the coast. Hopefully this absence will make the heart grow stronger.

On Columbus Day last week I found myself pretty much the only person I know with the day off so I ended up taking myself to see Into The Wild, a film I had really been looking forward to seeing go into wide release. For anyone who grew up reading books by Gary Paulson and Jack London, Into The Wild is a movie you’ll want to see and most likely will then want read the book of the same name that the movie’s screenplay was adapted from.
Other than the great direction and adaptation by Sean Penn and cinematography by Eric Gautier, it is Eddie Vedder’s mostly original soundtrack that is getting a preponderance of the film’s attention. Now not much of a Eddie Vedder fan (I stopped paying attention after Pearl Jam’s Vitalogy was released), I was surprised to find that these songs are actually pretty good and serve the film quite well. But the best song in the film “Big Hard Sun” (well second best if you count this one) is actually a cover, originally released on the 1989 album Big Harvest by the Canadian musician Gordon Peterson who performed under the monkier, Indio. And in a fine choice of musician casting, Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney takes the place of Joni Mitchell on the original for Vedder’s version, doing some excellent backup vocals, that in my mind, make the song.

Scott and I tried to see Dr. Dog back in July when they were at The Echo, but the line was super long and was at the point of one out one in. Hopefully this week we’ll have our shit more together and get there earlier.
