Monotonix at The Smell by ME

Monotonix from Tel Aviv, Israel, who I saw earlier this year in Austin at SXSW came through Los Angeles last night for a balls to the wall ripping set at The Smell. The 3-piece (vocals, guitar, drums) don’t need a stage and actually probably prefer the floor for their hurricane-like performances that leave both themselves and the audience usually covered in some type of fluid (I’m sure most club managers are glad the band prefers the floor as well, as they have quite the knack of creating a mess wherever they go). With a lead singer who has the presence like that of Eugene Hütz and David Yow, a guitarist who plays the rhythm, the lead, and the bass lines all at once, and a stand-up drummer who doesn’t stop no matter what piece of his kit is pulled away from him and hoisted above the crowd, Monotonix just might be one of the most exiciting live bands playing today.
