Monotonix at The Smell

Monotonix at The Smell by ME

Monotonix from Tel Aviv, Israel, who I saw earlier this year in Austin at SXSW came through Los Angeles last night for a balls to the wall ripping set at The Smell. The 3-piece (vocals, guitar, drums) don’t need a stage and actually probably prefer the floor for their hurricane-like performances that leave both themselves and the audience usually covered in some type of fluid (I’m sure most club managers are glad the band prefers the floor as well, as they have quite the knack of creating a mess wherever they go). With a lead singer who has the presence like that of Eugene Hütz and David Yow, a guitarist who plays the rhythm, the lead, and the bass lines all at once, and a stand-up drummer who doesn’t stop no matter what piece of his kit is pulled away from him and hoisted above the crowd, Monotonix just might be one of the most exiciting live bands playing today.

The Strange Boys in LA this weekend

strangeboys_pic.jpg
The Strange Boys photo by Sarah Jane Semrad

Dallas, TX’s The Strange Boys will be making their way to Los Angeles for a long weekend packed full of performances, sometimes two in one day. A quick topical comparison would be The Black Lips, except The Strange Boys don’t have a steamroller of hype behind them (Vice), which is probably why you haven’t heard of them yet. But give it time. And you can thank Sean Carlson who booked the band on past two Fuck Yeah Fests for initially kick starting our, and now your, interest in the band.

11/16 Live in the KXLU studios (5pm) - Los Angeles, CA
11/16 The Whistlestop - San Diego, CA
11/17 The Comic Bug - Manhatten Beach, CA (w/Bad Dudes, E>K>U>K, The Prayers)
11/17 The Vermont House - Los Angeles, CA (w/Brother Reade)
11/18 The Smell - Los Angeles, CA (w/Jay Reatard, No Age, Mika Miko, Disaster)
11/18 The Echo - Los Angeles, CA (Part Time Punks)
11/19 Linda’s Doll Hut - Anaheim, CA (w/Jay Reatard)

Pieta Brown at the Silverlake Lounge

pietabrown_pic.jpg

I went and caught Pieta Brown’s set at the Silverlake Lounge last night, the Iowan and daughter of the folk singer Greg Brown, just released her third album, Remember The Sun on One Little Indian (you can stream the album in it’s entirety there).

Pieta played solo, giving the performance a real “coffee shop” feel, which was a little disappointing given that a set with a backing band would have, in my mind, made a more striking impression. Don’t get me wrong, the songs were there as was Pieta’s beautiful voice, I just think that the Silverlake Lounge was not the ideal place for such a set from a singer-songwriter who has a very reserved stage presence and seems kind of lost in her own head.

If you happened to miss Pieta’s performance on KCRW yesterday morning (which is what I imagine she was in town for in the first place), it is streaming in both audio and video formats now on KCRW’s website, and was a pretty good precursor to her performance later that night with Pieta performing the songs “West Monroe”, “In My Mind I Was Talking To Loretta”, “Rollin’ Down The Track”, “Remember The Sun”, “Rolling and Tumblin” (Muddy Waters cover), and a new song called “Calling All Angels”.

Download “In My Mind I Was Talking To Loretta” (mp3) from Pieta’s new album Remember The Sun.

Also, take a listen to the song “807″ (mp3) from her previous album, In The Cool.
