Sleepy Sun embrace LA tonight

Kind of funny story about discovering Sleepy Sun. Yesterday morning I downloaded their debut ep, Embrace from iTunes after seeing that they are playing with Wires On Fire tonight at the Unknown Theatre and listening to a couple of tracks, and then got in my car and picked up my friend to carpool to work. Getting in the car he inquired what I was listening to and as soon as I told him it was like watching a light bulb go off above his head. He had just played with Sleepy Sun in Santa Cruz a few weeks back when on tour with his band and after seeing the band play, immediately thought that this would be a band that I would like. The only problem was that following the show he couldn’t remember the band’s name, he even called up the show’s promoter the next day and asked who they were. But between the time of the show and returning from tour he had forgotten again.
A couple of things, one, my friend definitely needs work on the memory thing, and second, we spend way too much time bullshitting about music – the guy is an veritable wealth of useless historical rock n roll trivia.
I have only been listening to Embrace for a day now, but I am already feeling strong enough about this release to shout my praises. Sleepy Sun take the listener on a ride of highs and low, intriguing and beautiful, the ep is very much a modern take on their classic rock and folk influences of the late 60′s and early 70′s. Comparisons to Black Mountain and their new album, In The Future, are sure to run abound.
