[I am pretty much incapacitated this week which will affect posting here for the next couple days, though I do hope to make it out to this show tomorrow night in addition to going to see Sleepy Sun at Alex's.]
The Henry Clay People’s new album, For Cheap or For Free, is the best album The Hold Steady didn’t put out this year, in fact it’s the album that I wish they had put out (so to speak) instead of super bland Stay Positive. With Cheap or For Free, The Henry Clays have crafted a masterful album of blue collar American bar rock that takes it’s cues from The Boss, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and The Replacements, and is the perfect soundtrack to making it through the 9 to 5 on into the night when you can forget about all the day’s B.S.

Currently on tour with Minus The Bear (who’s new ep of acoustic renditions of old songs I didn’t dig so much), Seattle’s Helms Alee hit the Fonda tonight with MTB and The Annuals. Still supporting their debut release Night Terror on Hydra Head, the band also just released a super limited Lionize/Truly 7″, that you can stream the A side of on Hydra Head’s blog.
For more info on this still yet undiscovered band, see what I wrote about them back in July when they played the Relax Bar.

Long Beach’s Magic Lantern have finally gone and released a new sonic document after what seemed like an eternity of waiting. Eagerly anticipated by those who have been biding their time waiting for the band to get on with their uber limited cassette only and CD-R releases (their Self-Titled CD-R was limited to 30), “High Beams”, the band’s latest opus, is available on both a format (vinyl LP) and in a quantity (500) that is obtainable by not just those who fill their shows at The Prospector. Anchored by two Goliath-sized jams, the heavy swirling drone of the opener “Deathshead Hawkmoth” and the psych boogie of the closer “Cactus Raga”, Read more »

I used to be a big fan of the band five years ago or so, but since then, haven’t followed them much after the release of the last album, Armed Love, which I wasn’t able to get into. But I am always game to give their new material a shot and look forward to checking out the new album that was recorded right here in Los Angeles at Sunset Sound.
