Dengue Fever - Sleepwalking Through The Mekong

Director John Pirozzi’s documentary, Sleepwalking Through The Mekong that follows the Los Angeles-based Dengue Fever as they perform for the first time in Cambodia shows tomorrow night at Egyptian Theatre (synopsis) at 7:30pm. This trek to Cambodia also marked the first time that a Western-based band playing Khmer Rock has performed in Cambodia since Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge took over the country in 1975. For bit more information on what happened in Cambodia in 1975 and Cambodian Rock, check out John Pirozzi’s other Cambodian Rock documentary, Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten (trailer) which documents the bands from the 60’s and what happened when the Khmer Rouge took to power and murdered 1/4 of the Cambodian population.

If you have been following local bands in Los Angeles over the past few years then I am sure you are at least aware of the Dengue Fever just by their bizarre name which is a disease that is found in the tropics and is transmitted and spread similarly to malaria. Or maybe you read about them in one of the many large scale publications who lauded their 2005 release Escapre From Dragon House, but maybe we turned off by their “World Music” label.

Well, take one listen to the song “Sni Bong” (mp3) below, which when I close my eyes transports me to what could be any scene from a 60’s Bond film in which Sean Connery is having a drink in a exotic bar, flirting with a beautiful girl, all the while keeping an eye on the villan he is following.

I don’t know, I am really digging it. I could care less that I can’t understand a word of what is being sung, this is music that really just transports you to another time and place. It’s a great vacation from the typical.

Sleepwalking Through The Mekong will be shown tomorrow, Thursday at 7:30, at the Egyptian Theatre 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA.
